AI-Assisted Media Monitoring for Government Communications
d@Media is an artificial intelligence system deployed by Employment and Social Development Canada to assist employees in creating internal media monitoring newsletters. The system uses advanced natural language processing and generative AI capabilities to automatically filter and summarize relevant news articles from publicly available online sources. Rather than manually reviewing hundreds of articles, employees provide predefined content requirements in advance, and the AI system intelligently identifies and summarizes the most relevant articles matching those criteria.
The system is currently in production and is used by Government of Canada employees who are responsible for monitoring media coverage and preparing internal communications. This AI system does not involve the processing of personal information about individuals. Instead, it focuses on analyzing publicly available news content to support internal business intelligence and communications functions.
Transparency is important: employees and the public should understand that this system uses automated filtering and summarization to speed up newsletter production. The AI learns patterns from predefined business requirements to identify relevant content, which means the system's recommendations reflect the priorities and parameters set by human users. Like all AI systems, d@Media has limitations and requires human review to ensure the summaries are accurate and appropriate for publication.
