AI-Powered Legal Research Assistant for EI Adjudications

The EI Jurisprudence Search Aid Tool is an artificial intelligence system developed by Accenture for Employment and Social Development Canada to support Service Canada Benefit Officers in their work. This tool helps officers assess Employment Insurance (EI) claims by automatically finding relevant legal references from Canadian courts and tribunals, including decisions from the Social Security Tribunal, Federal Court of Appeals, Supreme Court of Canada, and Federal Court. The system uses advanced AI techniques including generative AI, natural language processing, and retrieval-augmented generation to search through legal databases and surface the most relevant case law and precedents.

The tool is designed specifically for government employees responsible for Level 2 Adjudications, Requests for Reconsiderations, and appeals related to EI claims. By automating the legal research process, the system helps officers make more informed and consistent decisions based on established jurisprudence. This tool does not process personal information about individuals; instead, it works with legal documents and case law to support the decision-making process.

The system is currently in development. All AI systems that support significant decisions are subject to ongoing monitoring and evaluation to ensure they work fairly and effectively. This tool represents an important step toward helping government employees access the legal precedents they need to make sound decisions quickly and efficiently.
