AI-Powered News and Social Media Monitoring
Situational Awareness is a custom artificial intelligence platform developed by Global Affairs Canada in partnership with the National Research Council to monitor and analyze information from news outlets and social media sources. The system continuously collects articles and social media posts every 15 minutes from sources like Factiva and Twitter, then uses advanced machine learning to analyze the emotional tone, identify key entities, translate content, and assess relevance to Canadian interests.
The platform helps Government of Canada employees understand global events and public sentiment more quickly by automatically organizing and ranking news stories by relevance. It uses machine translation to process content in multiple languages and applies sentiment analysis to understand whether reports are positive, negative, or neutral. The system then presents findings through ranked lists, interactive maps, and analysis matrices to support informed decision-making.
This system does not collect or process personal information about individuals. It focuses exclusively on analyzing publicly available news articles and social media posts. The platform has been retired and is no longer in active use.
