AI-Powered CITES Permit Document Processing
This system uses artificial intelligence to automatically extract and organize information from scanned CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) permit documents. Rather than manually typing information from paper permits into databases, the AI reads the documents and creates digital records, making it faster and easier for government employees to access and manage permit information.
The system is currently in development and is a collaboration between Environment and Climate Change Canada's Enforcement Branch and Canadian Wildlife Service. It processes scanned PDF documents using optical character recognition (OCR) and large language models to identify key permit details and convert them into structured database records that can be searched and queried.
Please note: This system processes personal information contained in CITES permits. Primary users are Government of Canada employees responsible for wildlife permit administration and enforcement.
