Machine Learning Bridge Safety Monitoring
The Bridge Anomaly Detection Project is an artificial intelligence system developed by the Government of Canada that uses machine learning to automatically detect unusual patterns in sensor data collected from major bridges, including the Samuel de Champlain Bridge. The system analyzes continuous streams of sensor information to identify potential anomalies that may indicate structural issues or maintenance needs.
This system is currently in production and is used by Government of Canada employees to monitor bridge infrastructure and support maintenance decision-making. The system does not process personal information about individuals. By automatically detecting anomalies in bridge sensor data, this AI system helps ensure the safety and integrity of critical infrastructure while reducing the time needed for manual inspection and analysis.
Transparency is important to us. This page explains how the system works, what data it uses, and the safeguards in place to ensure it operates reliably and safely.
