AI-Powered Weather Forecasting for Canada

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is developing advanced artificial intelligence systems to improve weather prediction and forecasting services. The Meteorological Services of Canada (MSC) is exploring energy-efficient AI weather models such as GraphCast, ForeCastNet, and AIFS to increase the efficiency and accuracy of forecasts through 2030.

This AI system affects both ECCC employees who use it for operational forecasting and the general public who receive weather predictions and warnings. The system processes meteorological data to generate improved weather forecasts that help Canadians prepare for weather events and make informed decisions about their daily activities.

This system is currently in development and exploration phase. It does not involve the collection or processing of personal information about individuals. The AI models are being evaluated for their ability to improve forecast accuracy while reducing computational energy requirements compared to traditional forecasting methods.
