AI-Powered Real-Time Rail Network Monitoring
RailState is an AI-powered data platform developed by Transport Canada to monitor rail traffic across North America. The system uses cameras positioned along rail lines combined with artificial intelligence to automatically detect, count, and classify train movements. This provides real-time and historical information about network activity, performance trends, and situational awareness during service disruptions.
The system's computer vision capabilities analyze video footage to identify different types of rail cars, read identifiers when available, and create comprehensive records of train composition and movement patterns. This information helps transport planners and operators make informed decisions about rail network management and respond quickly to disruptions.
RailState is currently in production and used by Government of Canada employees. The system does not involve collection of personal information about individuals, focusing instead on infrastructure and asset monitoring. Camera feeds are analyzed to extract information about trains and rail operations rather than people or personal activities.
