Automating Web Accessibility and Content Standards

The AI-based Web Accessibility Review and Enhancement (AWARE) system is a pilot project developed by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada to automate and optimize web publishing workflows. The system converts various document formats (Word, PDF, HTML, Excel, CSV, and images) into compliant HTML5 content while improving accessibility standards.

This system is designed for Government of Canada employees who publish web content. It generates clean, accessible code by converting and processing multi-format documents, facilitating integration with content management systems like Drupal, and supporting language translation. The system does not collect or process personal information about citizens or external users.

As of now, this system is in development. The Government of Canada is committed to transparency about how this AI tool works, including how it processes your documents and what technical measures ensure your content meets accessibility standards.
