Automated Ocean Data Quality Assessment

Fisheries and Oceans Canada has developed an AI-powered tool to streamline the quality control process for oceanographic data collected through Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CTD) sensors. Oceanographers have historically spent considerable time manually reviewing CTD data profiles to determine whether measurements should be retained or deleted based on data quality. This repetitive task diverts specialized expertise away from more valuable scientific analysis.

The AI-Assisted CTD Quality Control Tool uses advanced machine learning techniques to automatically flag problematic data for deletion or mark clean data for preservation. The system analyzes historical oceanographic measurements from the DFO Pacific Region to understand patterns of good and poor quality data, then applies this knowledge to new measurements. Government oceanographers will review and validate the AI's recommendations before making final quality control decisions.

This system is currently in development and does not involve the processing of personal information. It is designed exclusively for use by Government of Canada oceanography professionals to enhance productivity and maintain the integrity of scientific data collection.
