Climate Emulator for Enhanced Weather Forecasting
Environment and Climate Change Canada's Climate Prediction and Projection System uses artificial intelligence to enhance climate forecasting capabilities. The system implements climate emulators, such as the Allen Institute's ACE2 Climate Emulator, to improve the accuracy and reliability of climate predictions by increasing the size of ensemble forecasts and better understanding natural climate variability.
This AI system is currently in development and is designed for use by Government of Canada employees involved in climate research and forecasting. The system processes climate model output data to generate improved climate predictions and does not involve the collection or processing of personal information about individuals.
As an evolving system, the AI climate emulator is being adapted from its current deterministic form toward a probabilistic approach, which will provide more nuanced uncertainty quantification in climate forecasts. This transparency page explains how the system works, what data it uses, and how climate forecasts are generated.
