AI-Powered Research Facility Mapping and Analysis
SciMap is an AI-assisted geospatial reporting system developed by Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) to track and visualize research facilities, scientists, and publications across Canada. The system uses artificial intelligence, specifically Google's Gemini model, to clean and compare research data, helping government decision-makers identify partnership opportunities and inform investment decisions in Canada's research infrastructure.
The system processes research facility datasets, publication metadata, and scientist registries from Government of Canada and open data sources. It provides multiple capabilities including automated data cleaning, dataset comparison, geospatial visualization, and report generation. The system is currently in development and is designed primarily for use by Government of Canada employees. Important note: This system involves processing personal information about researchers and scientists. Multiple AI use cases are being explored, including chatbot interfaces and advanced decision support features.
As a geospatial intelligence tool, SciMap helps PSPC and partner organizations make evidence-based decisions about research investments and collaboration opportunities across Canadian institutions. The system is hosted on SharePoint and built on Microsoft Power BI infrastructure.
