AI-Powered Historical Imagery Georeferencing

Natural Resources Canada operates an artificial intelligence system that processes and aligns historical aerial imagery from the National Air Photo Library. The system automatically detects reference points, aligns images to geographic coordinates, enhances image resolution, and colorizes black-and-white photographs. This technology enables researchers, planners, and the public to access historical aerial images and study environmental and landscape changes over time.

The system is currently in production use by Government of Canada employees. It does not process personal information. The AI performs technical image processing tasks including image matching, control point detection, mosaicking, super-resolution enhancement, and colorization of NAPL imagery to make historical aerial photos more accessible and useful for analysis.

This system helps unlock decades of archived aerial photography, making it possible to track changes in land use, vegetation, infrastructure, and natural features across Canada's landscapes. By automatically aligning and enhancing these historical images, the system reduces manual effort and enables large-scale analysis of temporal changes.
