National AI-Powered Flood Risk Mapping
The Flood Susceptibility Index is a machine learning system developed by Natural Resources Canada that creates a national map showing how likely different areas across Canada are to be affected by flooding. The system analyzes patterns from historical flood events and uses climate variables and hydro-geomorphological data to predict flood-prone areas. This tool is currently in production and is used by Government of Canada employees to inform flood risk planning and decision-making.
The system does not involve the collection of personal information about individuals. Instead, it processes geographic and environmental data to generate predictions about flood susceptibility across different regions. By providing a data-driven assessment of flood risks, this system helps support disaster preparedness and infrastructure planning at the national level.
The AI system uses an ensemble machine learning model that tests the impact of multiple climate variables and hydro-geomorphological factors to improve the accuracy of flood susceptibility predictions. Citizens and communities can benefit from this publicly available flood risk information for emergency planning and property assessment purposes.
