AI-Powered Census Document Translation System
Statistics Canada has developed an AI-powered translation system specifically designed to translate census materials between English and French. The Census Translator is a finetuned neural machine translation model trained on historical census documents to accurately handle the specialized terminology and vocabulary unique to census work. Unlike generic translation tools, this system understands census-specific language patterns and technical terms, providing more accurate initial translations.
The system is currently in development and is intended for use by Government of Canada employees. It will generate initial draft translations of census documents, including those marked as protected-B and pre-release materials, which are then reviewed and refined by human language experts before final release. This human-in-the-loop approach ensures that while AI accelerates the initial translation process, trained linguists maintain quality control and accuracy. The system does not involve processing personal information and focuses exclusively on translating census documentation and metadata.
