Automated Classification of LiDAR Data
This AI system automatically classifies features in LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data collected across Canada. The system identifies and categorizes buildings, ground surfaces, water bodies, and other geographic features from aerial LiDAR scans and derived products. This automated classification helps Natural Resources Canada process vast amounts of geographic data more efficiently and consistently.
The system is currently in production and is used by Government of Canada employees to support natural resource management and mapping activities. The system does not process personal information, as it focuses on classifying geographic and physical features rather than individual data. The classification framework includes trained models, documentation, and guidance for continuous improvement as needed.
