CANChat is a generative AI chatbot system developed by Shared Services Canada and trained on Canadian data to support Government of Canada employees in their daily work. The system uses a large language model trained on 50 terabytes of unclassified Canadian government information, including content from the Government of Canada Web Archive, internal service desk articles, intranet resources, and Library and Archives Canada procedures. This approach ensures the system operates with Canadian data sovereignty while being hosted in Canadian data centres.
The chatbot is designed to enhance employee productivity by assisting with text drafting, research support, and knowledge management tasks. The system is currently in production and is available to GC employees. Importantly, CANChat does not process personal information about individuals—it focuses exclusively on supporting government work with unclassified data. The system represents Canada's commitment to digital independence and reducing reliance on foreign AI platforms for government operations.
