AI-Powered Risk Assessment for Low-Value Shipments

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is developing an artificial intelligence system to assess the risk level of packages in the Courier Low Value Shipments (CLVS) stream. This system uses machine learning and probabilistic modeling to evaluate incoming shipment data and assign risk scores that help border officials identify packages that may require additional inspection or enforcement attention.

The system is currently in development and is primarily used by Government of Canada employees working in border services and enforcement. This AI system does not process personal information about individuals, focusing instead on cargo shipment characteristics and historical enforcement patterns to make its assessments.

Citizens should know that this system helps CBSA process packages more efficiently by automating risk assessment, allowing border officers to focus their attention on shipments that pose a higher risk to Canada's security and safety.
