AI-Powered Trademark Application Pre-Assessment

The Canadian Intellectual Property Office uses an artificial intelligence system to automatically analyze goods and services descriptions in new trademark applications. This system detects potential issues before formal examination and suggests appropriate Nice classification codes, helping applicants correct deficiencies early in the process.

When you submit a trademark application, the system automatically reviews your goods and services descriptions and generates a pre-assessment letter with recommendations. For existing trademarks being renewed, the system suggests appropriate Nice classes if the original classification is unclear. This automated analysis has helped the Office process applications faster, reduce backlogs, and maintain consistent examination quality.

This system does not use or store personal information about applicants. The system is currently in production and is used by members of the public applying for trademark protection. The AI-powered pre-assessment is one step in the examination process—applications still receive full human examination by trained patent examiners.
