Automated Transcription of Indigenous Affairs Records

The RG10 Transcription System uses artificial intelligence to automatically transcribe approximately 6 million pages of historical records from Canada's Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. These records are crucial to understanding Indigenous history in Canada. The system employs Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) and Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) technology to convert images of historical documents into searchable, readable text.

This system affects members of the public by making these important historical records more accessible and easier to search. Instead of manually reading through images of old documents, people can now search for specific names, places, and topics within the transcribed text. The transcription technology was developed by Transkribus (READ-COOP), an organization based at the University of Innsbruck, in collaboration with Library and Archives Canada and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network.

Please note: This system is currently retired and no longer in active use. The system involved processing of personal information contained within the historical records being transcribed.
