Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has developed an AI-powered news topic detection tool to help identify emerging news stories relevant to the department's mandate. The system uses advanced language models and topic clustering to automatically analyze news content and assess its relevance to DFO's work, saving staff time and reducing the risk of missing important developments.
This system is currently in development and will be used by both DFO employees and the public. It analyzes news topics to surface connections between external developments and DFO's internal priorities and existing resources. The tool processes text data from news sources and Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat publications to identify relevant topics and determine what knowledge DFO already has to address them.
