AI-Powered Screening Anomaly Detection System

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) is developing an AI-powered computer vision system to detect screening anomalies at non-passenger screening checkpoints. This system is currently in development and uses advanced algorithms to identify unusual patterns or potential issues during the screening process, flagging them for human review and oversight activities.

The system processes visual information from checkpoint operations to support security personnel in their oversight responsibilities. This AI system involves the processing of personal information and will be deployed for use by Government of Canada employees. The system is being built using open source technology and development practices.

Citizens and employees should understand that this system augments human decision-making rather than replacing it—all flagged anomalies require human review before any actions are taken. CATSA is committed to transparency about this AI deployment and its role in aviation security operations.
