AI-Powered Statistical Program Classification

Statistics Canada is developing an artificial intelligence system that uses large language models (LLMs) to automatically classify and code statistical programs. This system is currently in development and is designed to explore how LLMs can be scaled horizontally to handle the classification of survey responses and statistical data according to established classification standards.

The system does not involve the processing of personal information. It is primarily used by Government of Canada employees who work with statistical data and classification systems. The LLM analyzes text from past survey responses and classification standards to learn patterns and automatically assign appropriate classification codes to new statistical programs and survey data.

As this system is still in development, Statistics Canada is carefully evaluating its capabilities and limitations. Citizens and businesses interacting with Statistics Canada should know that their survey responses may be processed through automated classification systems as part of ongoing efforts to improve efficiency and consistency in statistical data management.
