The Census Alt-text Generator is a bilingual AI tool developed by Statistics Canada to automatically create alternative text descriptions for images, charts, maps, and videos published in Census of Population materials. This system uses image-to-text processing to generate draft descriptions that help make census content accessible to people with visual impairments or those using assistive technologies.
The system is designed to improve operational efficiency by allowing Statistics Canada employees to verify and refine auto-generated descriptions rather than writing them from scratch. This approach ensures consistency and quality across all census publications while reducing the time required for manual alt-text creation.
This system is currently in development and does not process personal information. It is intended for use by Government of Canada employees managing census content publication.
