AI-Assisted Code Development at Fisheries and Oceans Canada

GitHub Copilot is an AI-assisted coding system currently in development at Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). This system uses artificial intelligence to help developers write code more efficiently by providing intelligent code suggestions and completions. The primary purpose is to enhance developer productivity and explore the operational value that AI-assisted coding can bring to government software development practices.

The system is being piloted with Government of Canada employees who work in software development roles. GitHub Copilot does not involve the collection or processing of personal information about Canadian citizens or the public. Instead, it focuses on supporting internal government development workflows by analyzing code patterns and suggesting relevant code improvements.

As this system is still in development, DFO is carefully evaluating its effectiveness and impact on development workflows. The government remains committed to ensuring that any deployment of AI-assisted tools maintains appropriate oversight and aligns with Canadian government standards for responsible AI use.
