AI Safety Enhancement for Advanced Driver Assistance
This AI system is being developed to improve vehicle safety by predicting driver intentions and actions before they occur. By analyzing driver movements, particularly eye gaze patterns, and aligning them with changes in the external environment, the system can enhance traditional advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) with a broader understanding of what drivers are likely to do next.
The system works by processing multi-modal data—combining information from different sensors and cameras—to create predictive models of driver behavior. This extended prediction capability allows safety alerts to be triggered earlier and more accurately, helping prevent accidents before they happen. The technology is being co-developed by the National Research Council Canada and the University of Western Ontario.
Currently in development, this system does not involve the collection of personal information about drivers. The system is primarily intended for research and development purposes rather than direct use by employees or the general public. All processing focuses on real-time safety prediction without creating persistent personal records.
