AI-Powered Fuzzy Name Matching for Border Security

Fuzzy Search (SSAName3) is a critical software system operated by the Canada Border Services Agency to identify and flag high-risk travellers and goods at the border. The system uses fuzzy name searching and matching technology to compare traveller and commercial information across multiple CBSA databases, including passenger records, cargo manifests, and enforcement intelligence. This helps border officials quickly identify individuals or shipments that may pose security or compliance risks.

The system processes personal information about travellers and is used by Government of Canada employees across CBSA's traveller, commercial, and intelligence and enforcement operations. Because the system works with sensitive personal data and makes decisions that affect border security outcomes, it is important to understand how it identifies matches, what information it uses, and what safeguards protect your privacy. The system is currently in production and actively used in border operations.
