AI-Assisted Audio Transcription for RCMP Investigations
The Voice2Text system is a web-based, offline, on-premise application developed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) that uses artificial intelligence to assist with the transcription and translation of audio files collected during criminal investigations. The system was created to reduce a significant backlog of audio files awaiting transcription, increase operational efficiency by a factor of at least 10, and provide investigators with timelier access to critical information that may affect surveillance, officer safety, and legal proceedings.
The system does not make any decisions on its own. When an audio file is uploaded, the AI engine generates a draft transcription or translation, which must then be carefully reviewed and edited by a qualified human transcriber or translator before it can be used in any investigative or legal context. Raw AI output is never disclosed or relied upon without this mandatory human review step.
To protect privacy, the application is designed to operate entirely offline and on-premise, with no connection to the internet. Audio files and their transcriptions are automatically deleted from the system once the transcription has been downloaded by the user. Access to the system is controlled through Active Directory authentication, ensuring only authorized RCMP personnel can use it. Members of the public whose communications appear in lawfully collected audio files should be aware that their voice data is processed by this AI system as part of the investigation process.
