Statistics Canada operates the Capital Expenditure (CapEx) Asset Coding Recommender, an artificial intelligence system designed to streamline the asset classification process. The system analyzes written asset descriptions and recommends appropriate asset codes, significantly reducing the time analysts spend on manual coding tasks. This tool is currently in production and is used by Government of Canada employees who work with capital asset data.
The system does not process personal information. It uses historical data from asset write-ins and existing code classifications (NAPCS and NAICS codes) to train its recommendation engine. By automating routine coding decisions, the system helps ensure consistency and efficiency in asset classification across government operations while allowing analysts to focus on more complex analytical work.
