AI-Powered Translation Tool for Government Documents
Statistics Canada has developed a specialized artificial intelligence system designed to assist professional translators and quality assurance officers in their day-to-day work. This machine translation tool, currently in development, uses advanced neural language processing to create initial translation drafts between English and French. Rather than replacing human translators, the system works alongside language experts as a productivity aid, helping to accelerate the translation workflow while maintaining quality standards.
The system is built on Microsoft Azure's Custom Translator technology and has been specially trained using Statistics Canada's own published materials and metadata in both official languages. This specialized training enables the translator to understand StatCan's unique terminology, formatting requirements, and institutional voice. The tool integrates seamlessly with existing computer-assisted translation (CAT) software used by GC employees, preserving document formatting from Microsoft products like Word.
This system does not process personal information. It is designed exclusively for use by Government of Canada employees who work in translation and linguistic services. The AI generates draft translations that are then reviewed and refined by qualified human linguists before final publication.
