AI-Powered Water Quality Forecasting System

The Oxygen Predictor for Atlantic Estuaries is an artificial intelligence system developed by the National Research Council of Canada to forecast dissolved oxygen levels in coastal waters. This system uses machine learning to predict low-oxygen events several days in advance, helping environmental managers protect marine ecosystems and support sustainable aquaculture operations.

The system analyzes water quality data from Atlantic estuary environments to anticipate problems such as eutrophication and harmful algal blooms. By providing early warning of oxygen depletion events, the system enables proactive management of coastal water quality and protection of marine biodiversity. The system is currently in development and is used by Government of Canada employees. This system does not involve the processing of personal information.

This transparent overview explains how the system works, what data it processes, and how decisions are made to support environmental stewardship in Atlantic coastal regions.
