AI-Powered Disability Claims Evidence Summarization

Veterans Affairs Canada is experimenting with generative artificial intelligence to help summarize client documents and information to support disability adjudication decisions. The Claims Summary Tool uses advanced document analysis and OpenAI technology to create comprehensive, concise evidence bundles from personal records and medical assessments. This system is currently in development and is being tested with adjudicators to ensure the generated summaries are complete and accurate.

The system processes personal information including client records, medical evaluations, and supporting documentation stored in VAC's Client Services Delivery Network and GCCase systems. The AI assists Government of Canada employees who are adjudicators in reviewing disability claims more efficiently and accurately. Because this system processes sensitive personal health and veteran information, Veterans Affairs Canada has implemented safeguards and is working closely with stakeholders to validate the tool's reliability before broader deployment.

This system involves personal information processing and has been registered in the Government of Canada's AI register for transparency and accountability. Veterans and their representatives should be aware that their information may be analyzed by this AI tool as part of the claims adjudication process.
