AI-Powered Document Declassification and Redaction
The Declassification and Redaction Tool is an AI-based system developed by the Government of Canada to assist with Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP) requests. The tool uses multiple AI models combined with human oversight to identify and redact sensitive information from government documents before they are released to the public. This system helps streamline the document review process while ensuring that protected information remains confidential.
The tool is currently in development and uses non-production and publicly available documents for testing. Once deployed in production, it will process documents containing personal information and will be classified as Protected B, Medium Integrity, Medium Availability (Pro B MM). Primary users include Government of Canada employees who handle ATIP requests and document declassification. Because this system processes sensitive government information and personal data, it includes human-in-the-loop review to ensure accuracy and appropriate redaction decisions.
Key transparency information: This system involves personal information processing, includes mandatory human review of AI recommendations, and follows strict classification protocols. Users should understand that while AI assists in identifying redactable content, final decisions about what information is released remain subject to human review and legal requirements under Canadian access to information legislation.
