AI-Powered Weather Forecasting for Canada
Environment and Climate Change Canada is developing advanced AI systems to improve weather prediction capabilities across the country. The Meteorological Services of Canada (MSC) is exploring energy-efficient AI weather models and developing a hybrid forecasting system that combines traditional meteorological methods with artificial intelligence. This initiative, outlined in the 2023 AI Roadmap, aims to integrate AI into MSC's forecasting processes through 2030, including the development of PARADIS, an all-Canadian weather prediction model that uses a technique called "spectral nudging" to blend conventional and AI-based approaches.
This system will be used by both government employees and the public to access more accurate and timely weather information. The system does not involve personal information collection, focusing instead on environmental and meteorological data to improve forecast accuracy and efficiency. Key initiatives include evaluating established AI models like GraphCast, ForeCastNet, and AIFS to identify the most suitable approaches for Canadian weather conditions.
